Heading on a Trip to New Zealand, Make the most of these 3 Family-Fun, Day Trips from Auckland

Heading on a trip to New Zealand soon? Then make sure to checkout these 3 family-day trips from Auckland.

Trip to New Zealand isn’t Complete without Visiting Auckland

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city and known locally as the “the city of sails” for being located on an isthmus between 2 harbours. A bustling urban hub, it’s the perfect place to setup base if you’re heading to New Zealand for a family trip. An ideal starting point, it’s easy to explore nature one day or jump into a cultural and immersive experience the next. Auckland has it all within easy reach.

Now, I could be a little bias towards Auckland (it’s my hometown after all), but if you’re heading this far down on the globe then you’ll want to explore our beautiful city. While the temptation of the South Island’s amazing scenery (think Milford Sounds, Queenstown, the Southern Alps) is often a draw card for a lot of tourists, hear me out on why Auckland should be on your itinerary.

Auckland is located centrally to a bunch of stunning places. Think, a couple hours to the ever-sunny Northland with it’s picturesque beaches or Rotorua, home of hot springs and mud pools.

Where to from Auckland?

With the above in mind, family-filled adventures are within easy reach of Auckland. If you’re wanting a cultural experience, head to Rotorua. If you’re looking to keep the kids entertained, checkout Auckland Museums interactive kids gallery. If you’re just wanting a bit of everything, then checkout one of the options from below.

Here are some of our favourite day trips from Auckland, that are family-friendly and an easy days trip:

Waiheke Island Adventures

Waiheke Island (pronounced Why-hair-key) is the biggest island of the many islands within the Hauraki Gulf. This day trip will keep the kids occupied from the minute you leave Auckland. Getting to Waiheke Island is easy. It’s accessible by ferry that leaves from the Downtown terminal. It’s approximately $55 return per adult and $26 return for kids. On the island, they have both a local bus and taxi service available and plenty of great walking tracks.

Waiheke Island is considered one of the jewels in the Hauraki Gulf. There are quirky art galleries, a couple of vineyards and some cozy cafes with a delicious foray of treats made with local ingredients. If you’re wanting something a little more adventurous, checkout the EcoZip Adventures. This is an awesome and exhilarating way to see the skyline and back across to the city. Most of the family will be able to do this, but kids need to be over 30kg.

Kayaking is also a super popular activity on the island and in the summer. Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore the beautiful waters and wildlife that surround Waiheke. Waiheke Adventure Centre is a great place to book, not only kayaks but SUP boards and even wind surfers.

Food

If you’re looking for something a little more low key, checkout one of the beautiful vineyards for some delicious food and locally made wine. Most vineyards allow you to walk amongst the fruits, and are a great place for kids to burn some energy. Our favourite vineyard is Stoneyridge vineyard, as you can sit in the outdoor area and look out over the vineyards (and kids) while you enjoy the local delicacies (try their Fallen Angel Pinot Gris, my fav.).

Bonus Tip: Waiheke Island is renowned for its olive oil production. Many groves offer tours and tastings – a delicious way to experience the island’s unique flavours. If you’re wanting an immersive experience checkout Allpress Olive Oil.

Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Waitomo(pronounced why-taw-maw)loosely means water caves. As you take a boat ride through the dark caves in search of glowworms, all kids, big and small, will be left in amazement. Located a 2.5-hour drive south of Auckland, the Waitomo Caves are made up of large caves (tomo) that are filled with fascinating rock formations and underground rivers.

Your journey begins at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, where you’ll board a small boat and glide silently through the dark. The ceilings sparkle with the bioluminescent glow of thousands of tiny glowworms. This is a magic starry night sky underground. It’s a mesmerising sight that will captivate everyone in your family. Local guides will share fascinating facts about the glowworms, the cave’s history, and the geology of the region. Waitomo has a strong Māori history and is often considered a very spiritual place.

After experiencing the Glowworm Caves, you can explore the nearby Ruakuri Cave. This cave offers a more hands-on adventure with a spiralling walkway descending into the depths of the cave. Ruakuri is a labyrinth of limestone formations. The tour is accessible for all ages and includes a thrilling, up-close view of underground waterfalls and glowworms.

The Waitomo Caves also feature the Aranui Cave. This is a dry cave known for its stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and high ceilings. This cave is less crowded and offers a quieter, more intimate experience of the subterranean world. It’s perfect for those who want to take their time exploring and photographing the intricate formations. Geology nerds will LOVE this cave and often it can be a peaceful and serene experience.

Adventure

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, the Black Water Rafting adventure is a must. This involves floating through the underground rivers on an inner tube. Experience jumping off waterfalls, and marvel at the glowworms above, close-up. This has been a personal family favourite growing up! Getting down into the heart of the caves is exhilarating. It’s a unique way to experience the caves but is more suitable for older kids (teens) and adventurous family members (there are some tight places).

Local Area

If you have younger children or prefer a gentler activity, consider taking a scenic walk around the Waitomo area. The Waitomo Walkway is a beautiful trail that meanders through native bush, farmland, and alongside the Waitomo Stream. It’s a peaceful way to enjoy the natural beauty of the region and stretch your legs after the cave tours. If you’re heading here in the wetter months (May-August) be sure to check the DOC website for any warnings or closures. While an easy-to-walk track, it can become precarious in rough weather conditions.

When it comes to dining, the Waitomo region has several cafes and restaurants offering delicious meals and refreshments. The Waitomo Homestead is a great spot for a family meal, serving hearty New Zealand cuisine in a relaxed setting. Don’t forget to try some local delicacies and recharge before continuing your adventure. If you’re into checking out something a little more spookier, the Waitomo Hotel (up on the hill) is considered one of New Zealand’s most haunted sites.

Bonus Tip

Combine your Waitomo Caves adventure with a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set for a double dose of magic! Located about an hour’s drive from Waitomo, Hobbiton offers a whimsical experience where you can tour the iconic set from the “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” films.

Walk among the hobbit holes, sip a drink at the Green Dragon Inn, and immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Middle-Earth. It’s an unforgettable experience that will delight fans of all ages.

Whether you’re seeking awe-inspiring natural wonders, thrilling adventures, or a touch of cinematic magic, Waitomo Caves offers a fantastic family-friendly destination that promises to leave lasting memories.

Wonders of the West Coast – Black Sand Beauties

New Zealand west coast beaches are famous for their black sand. Iron-rich sand, means even on the gloomiest days, the sand sparkles. There are plenty of black sand beaches to choose from, depending on how far and you want to travel. Each is unique, with their own communities, food and experiences on offer. Here are some of my favourites, all enjoyable day trips from Auckland:

Under and Hour From Auckland CBD

Piha

Piha is the most famous black sand beach near Auckland. It’s a surfer’s paradise and a must-visit for families looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation. Just a 45-minute drive from the city, Piha boasts stunning landscapes. One of them being the iconic Lion Rock, a natural formation perfect for climbing and photography. You can also take a hike up to Kitekite Falls, a beautiful waterfall located just a short walk from the beach.

The beach’s wild waves attract surfers from all over, but if you’re not into surfing, you can still enjoy the dramatic scenery, beach walks, and rock pools. The local community offers several cozy cafes and eateries where you can grab a bite and enjoy the laid-back vibe.

Huia Bay and Whatipu

For a more secluded and serene beach experience, head to Huia Bay and Whatipu. Located about an hour’s drive from Auckland, these beaches are ideal for families who enjoy exploring nature in a quieter setting.

Huia Bay is perfect for picnics, swimming, and gentle walks along the shore. Whatipu, on the other hand, is a rugged and remote beach known for its dramatic cliffs and caves. It’s a great spot for bird watching and offers several walking tracks. One of them includes the Whatipu Caves Track, where you can explore ancient caves and learn about the area’s rich history.

The scenic drive to these beaches through the Waitākere Ranges adds to the adventure, making it a memorable day trip for the whole family. Our favourite place to get something yummy here is definitely Alfred’s Huia Store.

Kariotahi

Kariotahi Beach, located about an hour south of Auckland, is a hidden gem known for its black sand dunes and stunning sunsets. This beach is a fantastic destination for families who love outdoor activities. You can try your hand at paragliding, horse riding along the beach, or simply enjoy a relaxing day building sandcastles and exploring the dunes.

The strong surf makes it a popular spot for experienced surfers, but there are also calmer areas suitable for swimming and paddling.

The nearby Castaways is a popular wedding venue, but also offers delicious meals in it’s restaurant and some luxury experiences (think facials and massage). With stunning views, this is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a little romance with your loved one.

Outside of the Auckland Region

Port Waikato and Sunset Beach

Port Waikato and Sunset Beach, approximately 1.5 hours from Auckland, are perfect for families seeking a tranquil beach day with plenty of natural beauty.

Sunset Beach is famous for its breathtaking sunsets, making it an ideal spot for an evening picnic. The beach is also known for its fishing opportunities, so bring along your fishing gear and try your luck. The nearby sand dunes are great for exploring and provide a fun backdrop for family photos.

For a bit of local history, visit the Port Waikato Wharf, where you can learn about the area’s maritime past. The small, friendly community here makes it a welcoming place for a family adventure.

Ngurunui Beach Lookout, Photo by Callum Hill

Raglan

Raglan, about two hours from Auckland, is a vibrant surf town renowned for its black sand beaches and world-class surf breaks. It’s a fantastic destination for families who enjoy a mix of beach activities and a lively town atmosphere.

The main beach, Ngarunui, is perfect for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing, with surf schools available for beginners. For a unique experience, visit the nearby Bridal Veil Falls, a stunning waterfall surrounded by lush native bush.

The town of Raglan itself offers plenty of cafes, boutiques, and art galleries, making it a great place to explore after a day at the beach. The laid-back vibe and beautiful scenery make Raglan a top choice for a family day trip.

Kawhia

Kawhia, a hidden gem about two hours south of Auckland, is famous for its natural hot water springs and cultural heritage.

The black sand beach here is unique due to the hot water that bubbles up through the sand at low tide, creating natural hot pools where you can soak and relax. This makes Kawhia an excellent destination for families looking for a unique beach experience.

The small town is rich in Māori history, and you can visit the Kawhia Museum to learn more about the area’s cultural significance. The scenic drive to Kawhia, passing through rolling hills and coastal landscapes, adds to the charm of this off-the-beaten-path destination.

Bonus Tip: Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the stunning scenery while exploring the island’s many walking tracks.

Don’t forget to checkout my blog post about the steamy little town called Rotorua, a 2-hour drive from Auckland, here. I hope you enjoy my hometown on your next trip to New Zealand, and as always feel free to send me an email at nicola@prettyfarfromhome.com.
