Rotorua is New Zealand’s natural, bubbling spa town. Offering up steamy adventures with natural hot pools, world-class bike rides and trails, Rotorua is one of the must-visit cities of New Zealand.
Getting There
Rotorua is approximately a 2-hour drive, a 1-hour plane ride, and a 3.5-hour bus ride from Auckland. With multiple options for getting there, Rotorua is the perfect getaway for kiwi’s and visitors alike. We love to drive from Auckland, taking a chance to catch some of New Zealand’s picturesque scenery. If you’re looking for flights or a bus trip check out:

Bubbling Hot Pools

One of Rotorua’s main attractions is its geothermal activity. The city is renowned for its natural hot springs and mud pools. With several amazing hot pool and spa activities you can enjoy, some of our favourites are:
- Polynesian Spa – where you can soak in therapeutic waters while taking in stunning views of Lake Rotorua. Located in the middle of town, this is an easy walk through Rotorua’s Government Gardens. Fun tip, my grandma who is in her 80’s, remembers swimming at the same pools when she was a little girl.
- Hell’s Gate and Mud Spa – A unique experience where you can soak in mineral hot waters and mineral mud baths. Leave this place with glowing and fresh skin as you enjoy some warm or hot pools.
- Wai Ariki Spa – This is a one-of-a-kind experience. Combining thermal and mineral waters with sound, sight and touch immersive interaction. These brand new hot pools, are rejuvenating both mentally and physically and by far one of the best experiences I have ever had.
World-Class Biking Trails

Rotorua is a paradise for biking enthusiasts.
The Whakarewarewa Forest, also known as the Redwoods, offers an extensive network of mountain biking trails suitable for all levels.
From beginner-friendly tracks to challenging routes for the experienced rider, the forest’s trails wind through towering redwoods and lush native bush, providing an exhilarating experience in a breathtaking setting.

With a world-class Mountain Bike park and all-grade tracks, Rotorua should not be overlooked if you’re into adventure. With plenty of e-bike/bike rentals available around town, whether you bring your own bike or not, you will have fund.
I was all smiles here, before a 50km bike ride from downtown Rotorua, out to Rainbow Mountain, finishing at Waiotapu and the Waikete Valley Hot Pools. With plenty of hot pools available, you can soak and relax after a hard days work.
If you’re looking for bike rentals in Rotoura, make sure to checkout: Mountain Bike Rotorua – they also run free ‘workshops’ to checkover your bikes before you head out on Saturdays, at the entrance to the Bike Park.
Adventure Activities

For thrill-seekers, Rotorua doesn’t disappoint either – if getting in with nature on a bike doesn’t sound like an activity you’re keen on, then why not checkout some of these adventures:
- Canopy Zip-lining – amongst the natural beauty of Rotorua’s lush forest, this is a must-do activity. Soar above ancient native trees, and observe the landscape from above. A guided tour, this is a great eco-friendly activity for even the most adventurous traveller in your group.
- Zorb Inflatable Ball – Fancy rolling down a mountainside in a large, inflatable ball? If it’s something you’ve never pictured yourself doing, you are missing out. Do it alone or bring along some friends and enjoy a splash down a 250m track.
- White Water Rafting – Boasting some of the worlds most untouched and rich white water rafting courses, be amazed at the turbulence and ancient scenery as you make your way down white water rapids. Fun fact, this is hands down the scariest but most exhilarating activity I have ever done and I would 100% do it again!
