We went to Universal Studios Beijing to celebrate my husband’s birthday.
We had a 5-year-old who is below most of the height limits. Who also — and this is important — does not like loop-de-loops. So this is not a review from a family of thrill-seekers who maxed out every ride. This is the honest review from a mum who spent equal parts in the Harry Potter queue and negotiating why we can’t buy the entire Minion gift shop.
Here is everything you need to know.
Yes. But I have two caveats.
Caveat one: It’s expensive. Budget for tickets, food inside the park, and the inevitable merchandise negotiations. Go it with clear expectations that your wallet will take a hit.
Caveat two: It’s best with older kids. If yours are under 4, they’ll love the spectacle but will be under the heigh limit for most rides. They’ll still have fun, but manage your expectations around how many rides they’ll be able to ride.
For families with kids aged 5-12, this is a genuine top-tier day out.
Book in advance – popular days sell out and walk-up prices are higher. Klook consistently has the best rates, and you can add the Express Pass if queues are a concern.
This is the reason to go. Full stop.
Hogsmeade is extraordinary. The detail is staggering – every shopfront, every owl, every crack in the cobblestones. Butterbeer is non-alcoholic and your kids will demand it within 30 seconds of arrival.
This is your under-5 zone. Gentle rides, enormous yellow characters everywhere, and the kind of visual chaos that toddlers genuinely love.
Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is the main ride – a simulator that even nervous riders can handle. Long queues but worth it.
The entire area is indoors. This is a genuine blessing the Beijing summer heat or winter cold. Visually stunning with Chinese lanterns and detailed theming. Gentle rides make it ideal for younger kids and this is a great place to stop and enjoy a snack (our favourite is caramel popcorn).
Dinosaurs everywhere.
Kids either love this zone or find it terrifying. The water ride is the highlight, but you will get wet. Bring a change of clothes or buy a poncho and shoe covers. If kids are big fans of dinosaurs, make sure you checkout the velociraptor interaction.
This one is for older kids. The Decepticoaster is intense. We watched people exit looking rearranged. Height limits apply and they’re strict. Worth it for the older thrill-seekers – skip with the young ones.
Good for food, shows and character meet & greets. Less about the rides and more about the atmosphere. Check the show schedule when you arrive (through the Universal Beijing App) – the lives shows are genuinely impressive and change depending on seasons, holidays and events.
We stayed at the Universal Grand Hotel and I’ll tell you exactly why it was worth it:
Early Entry: You get a dedicated hotel entry that bypasses the general entrance queues
Experience: The themed rooms (we had Minions) made the whole trip feel like an event, not just a day out
Convenience: Rolling out of bed and walking into the park takes 10 minutes. No traffic, no taxi, no stress.
The hotel is expensive for Beijing (think Western prices). If the budget is tight, skip it. But if you’re treating this as a special occasion trip, then early access alone saves and hour of queuing.
Our weekend was made up of 2-nights at the Universal Resort Hotel and a full day at the park. We had buffet breakfast both mornings and early entrance into the park (an hour before opening).
Trip.com has the best prices for Universal Studios hotel packages in Beijing. This includes rooms + ticket bundles that work out cheaper than booking separately. Check availability early as it sells out during peak dates.
Universal Beijing has a short but specific no-entry list: no outside hot food, no durian (yes, really!), no selfie sticks. Here’s what you will actually need:
Your phone will be running maps, scanning tickets, paying for everything and taking approximately 4,000 photos. Charging spots inside the park are limited and the ‘communal’ power banks are not efficient enough to keep up. A power bank is not optional.
Universal Studios Beijing is in the Tongzhou District. It’s about 40 minutes from central Beijing by metro (Line 1 to Tongzhou Beiyuan, then a direct shuttle).
Alternatively, DiDi (Chinese Uber) runs directly to the park entrance. For a group or with a pram, it’s often easier and not much more expensive.
Power bank, universal adapter, compression socks, stroller, rain cover, and 15 more things we don’t travel without. All with direct Amazon links.
It can be, but expectations matter. While there are kid-friendly areas like Kung Fu Panda Land and playground spaces, many rides are geared toward older children. For some families, a 5-year-old may prefer play areas over major attractions, which can make the experience feel less value-for-money.
If you’re traveling with older kids (7+) or extra adults who can help rotate rides, it can feel worthwhile. With younger children, especially if they aren’t thrill-seekers, the cost may feel high compared to how many attractions you actually manage to experience.
Staying on-site is extremely convenient for families. The biggest perks are early park entry, quick access back to the hotel for breaks, and shorter wait times in the morning. If your budget allows, the location alone makes a noticeable difference.
Not always. For families with young kids, Express Passes can be poor value if your child can’t ride many attractions. Early park entry through an on-site hotel stay can be a better investment.
Kung Fu Panda Land is the standout for younger kids thanks to its playground areas and gentler attractions. Harry Potter World is visually impressive, but may be more enjoyable for adults and older children.
Try to arrive by 5:00 pm and claim a viewing spot early. After 5:30 pm, crowds become very dense, and movement is difficult — especially with strollers or young children.
It can feel smaller depending on how much you’re able to do in one day. The park is beautifully themed, but families focused on thrill rides may want more time or additional help.
Toddlers may enjoy the themed environments and play areas, but many major rides won’t be suitable. For families with very young children, the value will depend on how much time is spent in free-play zones rather than attractions.
With young children, two slower days (especially if staying on-site) can work well. A single rushed day may feel exhausting and limiting, particularly if crowds are high. There is an option to buy a day + 1/2 a day pass if you’re staying at the hotel (this could be a great option).
Personally, I’d wait until my child is older before planning another major visit. The park itself is impressive, but I think the experience improves significantly once kids can handle more rides and longer days.
Universal Studios Beijing is exceptional. It’s the newest Universal Park in the world and it shows. The details, the scale and the experience.
With a young child below the height limits, you’ll spend most of your day in Harry Potter Land, Minion Land and Kung Fu Panda. And honestly? That’s still an incredible day.
Book your tickets in advance, arrive early, get to Harry Potter land first and buy the Butterbeer. You’ll thank me.
