3 Hassle-Free Activities to Do When Exploring Surfers Paradise with Kids

Before jetting off to Beijing, we did 7-days on the Gold Coast visiting family. (Checkout this post for more Gold Coast inspiration, here) While here, we checked out Surfers Paradise, taking public transport and spending the day exploring the Gold Coasts most famous attraction. If you’re looking for an easy day out with kids, then pack your togs and jump on the tram to Surfers.

Catch Public Transport

Public Transport on the Gold Coast is significantly discounted at the moment, with tickets costing 50c per ride for all passengers. This makes catching public transport a more convenient and cheaper option than driving.

For 5 adults and a child, it cost $2.50 one way! With the tram running from Helensvale all the way down to Broad Beach and through Surfers Paradise, the tram is the best way to get to Surfers, no matter what end of the Coast you are staying on.

Buy tickets at the station machines or tag on – and off with your debit or credit card. Each person will need a card, so we opted for paper tickets. For more information on fees (and how long they’ll stay 50c), checkout their website here.

We opted to park our rental vehicle at the Helensvale Station, and caught the tram from Helensvale to the Cavill Avenue station. It took approximately 30 minutes, and saved us from sitting in traffic and paying for parking. The tram drops you right in the centre of Surfers, a 2-minute walk from the boardwalk and famous Surfers Paradise sign.

We’re Here, Now What?

Surfers has plenty of things to do. You could be there all day and still not see it all, but here are some of my top recommendations:

1. Ripley’s Believe it OR Not – If you’re into weird and wonderful and sometimes a little spooky, then this museum of curiosities will tick your boxes. This is suited for kids a little older. Starting at $31.90 for adults, with a 3-way special available on their website, this is a great way to escape that famous Queensland heat, for a couple hours. For more information, checkout their website here.

2. Cycle or Walk the Boardwalk – Checkout the scenery and unobstructed ocean views, by cycling down the boardwalk.

Pay-as-you-go bikes are readily available along the ocean front and with a wide boardwalk there’s plenty of room for cyclists and walkers alike.

Biking is a good way to see the Boardwalk, without sacrificing too much time. Cycle all the way down to the Spit and back if you’re up for a challenge (don’t worry, it’s all flat).

One thing we noticed when walking down the Boardwalk was the change along the waterfront from recent storm activity here on the Gold Coast. What was once miles of golden sand, has become in some areas a cliff face with a 10ft drop on to the sand. It’s still beautiful, but if you’ve been here before, then it’s worth a look to see the impact of climate change in this part of the world.

3. Time Zone – Here me out, I know you could go to Time Zone anywhere, but Time Zone at Surfer’s is more than just games. Combining escape rooms, games, bowling, laser strike and even ax-throwing, this entertainment complex has something for everyone.

Time Zone, Surfers Paradise

If you’re new to Timezone, ask at the counter for their weekly specials. We got a $30 deal, that included 60-minutes of gameplay, tickets and a premium game (think claw machine) per person. Each week is different, so it’s always best to ask staff before purchasing to make the most of the best deals. For more information checkout their website here.

Surfers also has very good shopping, so if you’re more for wandering around and looking at the shops, there’s plenty of opportunity to do that as well.

Food, Food, Glorious Food

When the tummies start rumbling, it’s time to grab something to eat. There are plenty of options, including classic takeaways like KFC, Wendy’s and McDonald’s right through to high end eatery’s with excellent ocean views.

The View at Sunset, TGI Fridays, Surfers Paradise

We opted for TGI Fridays. With it’s great waterfront views and weekly specials, it had something for everyone. Sitting in a relaxed atmosphere, with an open air vibe and ocean views, this place serves tasty, finger lickin’ American style BBQ. From hamburgers to chicken wings and steak, everyone will find something they enjoy on the menu.

Mozarella Sticks

One of the best things about TGI Friday’s is their range of cocktails and mocktails. Happy Hour started at 4pm, so I enjoyed a Pina-No-Lada (alcohol free Pinacolada) and an Old Fashioned Lemonade. It was a great way to end a busy day exploring the delights that Surfer’s Paradise has to offer.

End the Night With a Stroll

We opted to end the night with a quick stroll along the waterfront and some Yo-Chi before making our way back to the tram station. With a light breeze, the waterfront was still as busy as during the day. Lots of people were out and about enjoying that Queensland evening warmth.

After our stroll, we headed back down Cavill Avenue to the tram, which had lit up with neon lights. It was a great way to end the day, and our daughter was ready for a quick nap on the tram home after a big day exploring.

🌏 FAQ: Planning a Day Trip to Surfers Paradise with Kids

Is public transport really only 50 cents on the Gold Coast?
Yes! As of our visit, all public transport rides were just 50c per person, regardless of age. This includes trams, trains and buses. It’s an affordable and easy way to get around, especially with a group. Check the Translink website for up-to-date fare info and to confirm how long the discount is running.

How do I pay for the tram?
You can tap on and off with a debit or credit card (each person needs their own), or buy paper tickets at the station machines. We opted for paper tickets since we were a group.

Where’s the best place to park and catch the tram to Surfers?
We parked our rental car at Helensvale Station for free and caught the tram directly to Cavill Avenue Station. The tram ride took about 30 minutes and dropped us right in the heart of Surfers Paradise.

What can I do with kids at Surfers Paradise?
There’s something for every age and interest! A few kid-friendly favourites include:

  • Ripley’s Believe It or Not – great for curious minds (probably best for kids 7+)
  • The Boardwalk – rent bikes or just walk along the beach
  • Timezone – packed with games, bowling, escape rooms and more

Are there food options for fussy eaters or groups?
Absolutely. From takeaway chains like McDonald’s to sit-down restaurants with ocean views, Surfers has a wide range. We loved TGI Fridays for its relaxed vibe, American-style meals, and great mocktail options.

Is Surfers Paradise walkable with kids?
Yes – everything from the tram station to the beach, shops, and restaurants is within easy walking distance. Bring a stroller if you’ve got younger kids, and don’t forget sunscreen and hats!

Is it worth doing Surfers Paradise in just one day?
Definitely. While you could easily spend more time there, one full day gives you a great taste of what Surfers has to offer—especially if you plan a few key stops and take advantage of public transport.
